The Top Ten - week ending 30 January 2016

Welcome fellow loungers!

As we come to the end of what is probably the coldest month of the year, we revel in the thought that Spring draws that much nearer. All of you in the Northern Hemispheres hang in there a little bit longer.

OK....well, Saturday is once again upon us. A time not only for household chores perhaps, but also a time for relaxing and recharging the emotional batteries, aided by the laidback sounds of chill out and smooth and soft jazz....and why not tune into This is Lounge as the soundtrack to your housecleaning?

Artists such as Michael e, Peter Pearson, and Clive Button create a soundtrack that takes us all on an escape from the harsh realities that stress out our daily lives. They repair the psychological imbalance of well-being, damaged by news of war and strife around the world. This is Lounge is doing it's small part in spreading the sounds of these artists in an attempt to influence your lives. We encourage the support of these artists.  Most of them (and myself included) are working "day jobs" to support their creative outlet. They are not rock stars earning millions. This genre is finding a small, but growing, audience as the need for stress relief grows. Please continue to support them by downloading through iTunes, Amazon, etc., and together we can do our little part in making our lives a little better.

Mmmm, thanks for allowing me that bit of introspection. Now, on to this week's chart.

Big news! Christophe Goze has maintained his number one position this week, as we all have taken a liking to the uplifting sounds of The Nightfly.  latest Jill Barber's cover of the 60's pop song, Sukiyaki, slides into number two, while Toronto guitarist, Rob Tardik, stays put at number three and completes the trifecta.

Aforementioned Michael e continues to move up with a track from his album, From Within. He moves into number five. After sneaking into the Top Ten last week, Pieces of A Dream bumps up a couple of spots, as interest in their love song, Dream On, continues to grow.

Finally, making the leap from Bubbling Under this week, the duet of Diana Krall and Sarah McLachlan cover of a classic Gordon Lightfoot tune, and it makes the leap to number ten.

Of course, speaking of Bubbling Under, we saw a short new track sneak into the playlist from alternative/ambient/trip hop artist, Tricky. Released this week, Skilled Mechanics continues down a dark and disquieting path. Unreal is a richly coloured and introspective (dare I say menacing?) song, and felt by us here at the station to be a very creative addition to the playlist. I hope you enjoy it.

The Top Ten - week ending 23 January 2016

Happy Saturday, my fellow loungers! Thanks for checking in this week. As a huge winter storm pummels the Eastern U.S. with 30-60 cm. of snow, let me suggest to any listeners in that part of the country - relax and listen to This is Lounge while you're out there shovelling. It will help to keep that frustration level down.

First, I would also like to give a big shoutout to Matthew Smith of Birth of The Fool. Thank you for "turning on the Download switch" on your Soundcloud page for many wonderful tracks. Included are two very new tracks that he's uploaded, which are very special, and are Bubbling Under this week. Thanks Matthew for your generosity. Note to everyone: please seek his music out on iTunes, as well as Soundcloud, for some great sounds.

I would also like to thank Jack from The Warheads. I really appreciate and welcome the music you are sharing. Some of it is already playing on the station! From the looks of it, you are consistently writing and recording beautiful music on an almost daily basis! Keep up the great work, my friend! Thank you.

Now, on to the chart this week.....

The Nightly flies into number one this week, knocking Hotline Bling down a few positions. Canadians Rob Tardik and Jill Barber continue to rise, along with Soundcloud-find, Quiet Nights Lounge, who sneaks in behind Christophe Goze.

Classic chill artists Michael e and Clive Button continue to enjoy well-earned positions with their beautiful soundscapes. I hope they "take you on a journey", as my friend Guido Van Der Meulen would say.

Making the jump this week from Bubbling Under, Pieces Of A Dream's smooth jazz, Dream On, comes in at number ten.

Speaking of Bubbling Under, and as mentioned above, two new tracks from Birth of The Fool come onboard this week. We couldn't decide on just one, so both tracks are up and playing. I'm sure that you are enjoying them as much we are here at the station.

Also, I have to thank my friend Guido for the other new track this week, culled from a recent Guido's Lounge Cafe show.  I was really taken by this cover and remix of Adele's recent chart-topping hit,  Hello. Thanks Guido for turning me on to that.

As usual, please continue to support these and all the artists on the station through your favourite digital retailer.

Bubbling Under

As a footnote, allow me to say, I hope that you've been enjoying David Bowie's version of Volare, taken from the Absolute Beginners soundtrack. He appears to have had so much fun recording that, that we here at the station have decided to continue it's regular rotation, as sales of Bowie's music continues to rise post mortem.

Thanks for listening.

The Top Ten - week ending 16 January 2016

Welcome back, my fellow loungers!

As the Winter chill continues around the Northern Hemisphere, it's comforting to know that we can cocoon ourselves indoors, and perhaps relax by a fireplace, and enjoy the sounds of jazz and chill.

I'm sure many of you have escaped (or are planning to escape) to Southern climates for a warm and sunny vacation, as the Caribbean, Mexico, and South and Central America are into their high tourist season right now....and it's summer in Australia!

But wherever you are, you can still tune in via wi-fi to the relaxing sounds of This is Lounge.

Now, on to the Top Ten! This week shows some major changes, as we see Marijan hit number one. Drake's novelty hit has been covered and parodied around the world, as he battles with Adele for worldwide chart supremacy. But here, the song, in it's laid-back form, is in a class by itself.

Christophe Goze's breezy track, The Nightly, follows in behind Marijan to take the number two position, as Senza fine drops to number three.

Jill Barber's cover of Sukiyaki, and Smooth Jazz guitarist Rob Tardik's Eros move up the charts, gaining ground and making room to accommodate two new Bubbling Under artists. We see another track from Michael e's latest, and chillout composer Clive Button joins the Top Ten with his beautiful Starburst.

Speaking of Bubbling Under, we've been holding back on three tracks due to the Christmas season. Not wanting to get lost in all the joyous Christmas songs, they have premiered this week on the station.

Diana Krall & Sarah McLachlan duet on a cover of the Gordon Lightfoot classic, If You Could Read My Mind. A well matched pairing for these two, taken from a deluxe edition of Diana's Wallflower album. Having done Christmas Time is Here a few years ago, it's nice to see them joining forces once again.

This week, we also pull from the Smooth Jazz charts for  tracks from the latest Pieces Of A Dream and Fourplay albums. Tune in for these welcome additions.

Mmmm....seems like there's an unintentional number of Smooth Jazz tracks this week. Enjoy.

Thanks for listening, and supporting the artists through your favourite digital retailer.

I would also be amiss without offering my condolences to the world for the tragic loss of David Bowie. As the world continues to mourn his loss (and taking his latest Blackstar album to the top of the charts), I am reminded of a long forgotten fun, lounge cover of a Italian classic, taken from the soundtrack of the 1986 film, Absolute Beginners. I've already posted this on Facebook, but I would like to add the link here as well. In honour of David, the song is also being added to the This is Lounge playlist. It's too much fun to ignore! So after the chart below, check out the video for the Grammy-winning song, Volare by David Bowie. The Top Ten - week ending 9 January 2016

Posting this a little late today, but I've been busy. Since my daughter returns home, we've been busy cramming in last-minute visits with relatives. I need a few minutes of tranquility here.

A few things, musically, happened this week. We saw the addition of some new music from Clive Button. His song, Starburst, began bubbling under this week.

This week also finds Matteo Brancaleoni moving into the number one spot with his rendition of the Italian classic, Senza fine.

St. Germain drops, Christophe Goze rises, and Jill Barber and Rob Tardik are new arrivals from Bubbling Under.

Thanks for tuning in. Thanks for supporting the station and it's artists.

The Top Ten - week ending 2 January 2015

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!

I hope everyone has recovered from the celebrations. Here's hoping that 2016 brings peace and prosperity, hope and friendship. As Mr. Lennon wrote, "Imagine....."

A big shoutout to Guido of Guido's Lounge Cafe. If you haven't heard his 200th broadcast, scroll down for my share of his Mixcloud upload. If you are quick enough, you can even download it if you like. Anyway, congratulations Guido. I look forward to more wonderful mixes.

On to the chart now, we see that St. Germain has been wrestled from the top as the Italians, Daniela Nardi and Matteo Brancaleoni move into the top two positions. Bravo! German pianist, Marijan, slides in behind at Number Three, vacated by Mr. Alpert.

No one leaves the chart this week as the reshuffling moves newcomers Christophe Goze and the
Quiet Nights Lounge up, and Lana Del Rey and SAMBOX down.

Congrats again to Micahel e for being on top of our Top Tracks of 2015. In honour of that, I thought it nice to revisit that new album and add another track to the New Releases playlist. So this week, his song, With Each Passing Moment (Guitar Mix) begins to bubble under. I'm sure you will enjoy it

Stay tuned to the station for two of those new releases from The Warheads, as mentioned in a posting below. They, too, shall be bubbling under very shortly.

Thanks for supporting the artists and the station. (I hope you gave someone the "Gift of Music" for Christmas.) It helps to keep the music coming.

Guido's Lounge Cafe: A New Year, A New Milestone

It is very fitting that my friend's, Guido's Lounge Cafe, should hit his 200th show at the beginning of the new year. This genre of music is gaining in popularity thanks to people like Guido.

The Warheads Last Minute Year-end Releases

As the rest of us prepared for our New Year's Eve celebrations, that wondrous collective known as The Warheads were busy compiling their top 50 faves, as well as releasing some new music to iTunes - the first time in years on the Canadian iTunes, anyway.

Included on their Top Tracks of 2015, are Indara, Fiel, My Dinner with Frida, and Refrain 1959. These, plus two others were just released on iTunes over the past few days.

Listening to the Top Tracks, one is amazed at the consistent creative quality of their work. From chillout to smoky jazz, I could easily program every song in the list.

So, as a New Years treat, treat yourself to a few new songs. Of course, at least one of these should be sneaking onto the TIL playlist very soon.
